We finally did it! Went on a great road trip this past weekend. Blog post to follow with all the details. We did a lot in 2.5 days and can't wait to spend more time in a few of the places we visited.

Thanks to all of you for contributing your ideas and votes!

Thanks everyone! We ended up taking a day trip last weekend to Minas and Villa Serrana. It was lovely, albeit a little rainy, but absolutely beautiful countryside.

We've felt somewhat land locked (is that possible when living so close to the water?) because of all the holiday weekends recently- Carnival and now the presidential inauguration on Monday. Car rentals are scarce and we will have to check on the bus schedule to get out of MVD for a few days.

We'll save Salto for the colder weather and I will make the executive decision that we will go to the eastern coast of UY for this trip. Brad, whatcha think of that one?? Where exactly? Who knows. We'll let you know where we end up.

There is a national park near Punta del Diablo, called Santa Teresa, which has a fortress and beautiful beaches. Also, there is a lake called Laguna Negra.

There are plenty of articles on Punta del Diablo for us poor sops stuck in MN so it would be nice to see a different area of Uruguay like the lakes region. Thanks for the blog it just snowed again here and it is nice to imagine living there.

There are places like Minas (Lavalleja) and Villa Serrana ( in Lavalleja as well). Also you may choose Estancias Turísticas. There are quite a few in different parts of the country. Just google them and you'll find plenty of info. Have fun and enjoy!!

oooh so many choices so little time! Save Salto until its cooler, getting into hot hot water when its hot outside is a little overwhelming and not so enjoyable (if there are any Uruguayans answering on here, how is Salto doing these days after the flooding? recovering well?)

On the coast there are SO many gems! The carnaval in La Pedrera is mid February (I think 14th and 15th this year), thats good fun, its also a sweet little town. The sand dunes in Valizas are really breath taking and not a hard climb for the incredible reward you get at the top! Of course everyone needs to visit Cabo Polonio at least once, and this time of year is perfect because its still warm but all the crowds have left....and then there's my 2nd home - Punta del Diablo. Just after high season this place is divine, every beach ends in another pristine tranquil beach, the colourful wooden huts, the seafood, the onda, its just a fantastic place.

Enjoy your travels!
